Wheel and Tire Cleaning Without Damage

Wheel damage is expensive and permanent. The finish on your wheels decides what you can safely use.

Most wheel cleaning advice stops at the phrase pH neutral, which is not enough information to keep you out of trouble. The question that determines whether a cleaner is safe is what finish your wheels have, and that answer varies enormously across the same car park.

Bare polished aluminium, chrome, PVD, anodised, powder-coated, painted, matte and ceramic-coated wheels all respond differently to the same chemical. An acid cleaner that safely strips brake dust from a painted wheel will permanently haze bare polished aluminium. The damage is not reversible and a set of wheels costs more than most people’s entire detailing collection.

How iron removers actually work

The colour-changing products are not a gimmick. They contain a thioglycolate compound that reacts with embedded iron particles, and the purple bleed is the reaction product becoming water soluble so it can be rinsed away. That is genuinely useful chemistry and it explains both why they work on iron fallout and why they do nothing for brake dust that is merely sitting on the surface.

It also explains the smell, which no amount of fragrance ever fully covers.
