Why We Built ShineMD Instead of Recommending One

Last updated

Let us get the important part out of the way in the first sentence, because you should not have to hunt for it: this website is published by Shine Master Detailers LLC, the company that manufactures ShineMD. We make one of the products we write about. We are not an independent review site and we will never present ourselves as one.

What follows is the reason that arrangement exists, rather than an apology for it.

We went looking for a product to stand behind

We came at this from the shop floor, not from a marketing department. The problem we kept running into was not that good coatings did not exist — several genuinely excellent professional coatings do. The problem was that nothing in the category served the person who wanted a real, durable, hydrophobic layer on their paint and had a weekend rather than a multi-day preparation window and a climate-controlled booth.

The professional solvent coatings were superb and unforgiving. They demanded meticulous surface preparation, tight environmental control, and a level of application skill where a lapse in technique leaves high spots that then have to be polished out. Recommending one to somebody working on a driveway is setting them up to fail.

The consumer sprays that were supposed to fill that gap mostly underdelivered. They applied easily and looked good on day one, which is the easiest thing in the world to achieve and the least useful. Water behaviour would fall off far sooner than the label suggested, and once beading stops the protective layer is already going.

So the honest options were a product most people cannot apply correctly, or a product that does not last. We were not satisfied with either, and we decided to formulate something that sat in between.

What the category still gets wrong

Two things, and they are related.

Nobody measures durability. This is the failure that shaped everything about how this site is built. Durability is the single most important property of a coating and the entire category asserts it rather than measuring it. Manufacturers publish a figure with no method behind it. Affiliate sites repeat the figure. Forum threads contradict both. We have seen the same product credited with eight weeks of life by one source and nine years by another, each claiming to have tested it.

Graphene became a word instead of a claim. Our own product is graphene-infused, so we have a commercial interest in graphene meaning something. Which is exactly why it bothers us that almost nothing written about it is falsifiable. The material genuinely is remarkable — that part is not marketing. But “graphene is two hundred times stronger than steel” tells you nothing whatsoever about whether a spray containing some of it protects your paint better than one that does not. We looked for anyone who had tested that question and found essentially nobody.

What we do about it

We run our own tests, we fix and publish the method before we collect data, and we put every reading up as it is taken.

That includes a controlled comparison of our own graphene coating against an equivalent silica coating, testing the specific claims the category makes about graphene: dust resistance, thermal behaviour, marring resistance. It is designed so that it can fail. If the graphene panel accumulates the same dust, runs the same temperature and mars the same amount, we will publish that result here, about our own product.

We would genuinely rather know. If graphene contributes nothing measurable at the concentrations a consumer spray can carry, that changes what we should be making, and no amount of favourable copy is worth not knowing.

What this means for how you should read us

Read us as a manufacturer showing its work, because that is what we are. Do not take our verdict on our own product on trust — we have an obvious interest in it. Take the method, which is published in enough detail for you or anyone else to repeat it, and take the raw numbers, which go up unedited.

Where a competitor beats us on a measure, the table will say so. That is not modesty, it is the only thing that makes the rest of it worth reading. A brand that only ever publishes results it likes has told you nothing.

If you find an error in our method or a result that does not reproduce, tell us and we will publish the correction.
