Chemical Guys

High-volume enthusiast brand with an enormous catalogue and heavy marketing presence, selling SiO2 gels and sprays alongside a full detailing range direct and through retail.

How you buy it
Installers and consumers

Chemical Guys publishes a one-year durability claim and a fortnightly reapplication instruction about sixty words apart, on the same page, for the same product.

Background

One of the largest enthusiast detailing brands by catalogue size and marketing reach, selling everything from shampoo to coatings direct and through retail. Its two flagship protection products are HydroSlick, a gel described simultaneously as “a true ceramic coating” and as “The First Ever HyperWax”, and HydroCharge+, a spray.

We could not verify a legal entity, a headquarters address or a founding year from anything on their own website. Third-party business directories offer several answers and we are not going to pick one for them.

Where the figures disagree

On the HydroCharge+ page, “up to one year” appears in the features list, “up to 12 months” appears in a feature block below it, and “ideal for weekly or bi-weekly touch-ups” appears in the details section immediately after. A product that needs reapplying every two weeks and a product that lasts twelve months are not the same product.

The most likely explanation is mundane: the twelve-month figure describes the coating’s life, the fortnightly instruction describes its role as a topper over an existing coating. But the page never says that, and a reader working out which number applies to them is doing work the manufacturer should have done.

Two things worth knowing before you buy

HydroCharge+ is a reformulation of the older HydroCharge — “Reformulated for ultra fast application” — so reviews and durability reports for the previous version do not transfer to the bottle currently shipping. At the time we looked it had six reviews to HydroSlick’s 333.

Both products carry Proposition 65 warnings, and they name different substances: cumene for HydroSlick, formaldehyde for HydroCharge+. With no safety data sheet reachable from the product pages, the Proposition 65 notice is the most specific composition information available.

Where Chemical Guys’s own figures disagree

These are not our measurements. Each row is a figure the brand publishes about itself, with the page it appeared on and the date we read it. We are not adjudicating which one is correct — the useful observation is that a specification with several published values was asserted rather than measured.

How we checked: Both flagship product pages carry an expandable "Chemical & Ingredient Information" section plus a California Proposition 65 warning, so some ingredient disclosure exists, but we could not resolve an underlying safety data sheet document URL from either page or find an SDS library on the site. No test data, method or lab is published behind the durability claims. We also could not find a legal entity name, headquarters address or founding year anywhere on chemicalguys.com. Everything on this page about the company traces to one of these, with the date we read it. Brands edit their own claims, so an undated citation is worthless.
